BERE’S EYES – a major challenge

With deep sadness, we have to inform you that our latest chimpanzee rescue, Bere, is facing a worrying eye health problem. During a routine examination carried out by our veterinary team, we indeed noticed that his right eye was showing a worrying opaque sheen. So, we called in an eye specialist to take a closer look at our young protégé’s case.

After a thorough analysis, the diagnosis turned out to be more complex than expected. The specialist found lesions and infections in both of Bere’s eyes, but reassured our team that these problems could be resolved with a course of antibiotics in the form of drops and ointment.

Unfortunately, the real challenge lies in Bere’s right eye where trauma has led to the development of a cataract. This is an extremely worrying situation, as the only solution to save this eye is complex surgery.

Today, the biggest obstacle we face is logistical. The city of Lubumbashi does not have a veterinarian specialized in ophthalmic surgery, and so there are no clinics specializing in this field. This delicate procedure requires the intervention of a seasoned expert with state-of-the-art equipment, which means that we will have to call on foreign specialists for this operation.

That’s why we’ll soon be launching an appeal to the public’s generosity to help Bere. We need to find the specialist and budget for his travel and stay. Every donation, no matter how small, will help raise the funds needed to save BERE’s right eye.

We hope you will be able to join us in this vital mission. Your generosity can make all the difference in preserving this little creature’s sight, paving the way for a bright future in our primate community.

In advance, THANK YOU for HIM!
