Yes, I’m afraid, no wonderful news for this time, dear Friends….
July and January usually are two horrible months. I hate July because of its terrible changes in temperatures (it can be 5° C at 6.30 am and then 28°C at 10 am!) and January is always too humid and cold too due to heavy rains.
Among the ‘big’ ones of the main group, there fortunately was no fever at all last week – only Maya, Kala, Seki, Chita and Jacky had runny noses and Wimbi had a bad cough…
But worries mainly came from the nursery group:
– Santa and Vida had high fever and both had a new treatment as fever persisted even 8 days after they had started antibiotics. Santa even had inhalations as she really had respiratory problems;
– Ekolo is still coughing badly and fever is coming up now and again;
– Pundu, Bapu, Kimo, Nalia, Pasa & Dian have had runny noses and I really hope nothing else will start;
– Africa, Maïka and Rosie were the 3 youngsters showing no signs of flu at all but had slight fever last night ;
– Elia and Tika are the oldest chimps of the nursery and seem to be fine.
But the worst is Tommy who got recently introduced into the group. Because he has been under such pressure being introduced and also probably because of these long months of struggle against infection (osteomyelitis), Tommy’s immune system was weak and flu quickly turned into early pneumonia … He was brought to our house again for day and night intensive care…
Vet Jean Claude decided to inject antibiotics rather than give oral treatments. Fever refused to go down and little Tommy was regurlarly wrapped up in wet towels and had wet clothes on his head and forehead…
The first signs of improvement were noticeable on the 5th day when temperatures came back to normal and when Tommy started eating again… Treatment worked and , believe me, this was such a relief!!!
Today, life seems to be back to normal again at J.A.C.K. The weather is a bit warmer, a few babies still have their treatments, and fever is under control. Tommy is doing a lot better and will soon join the nursery group enjoying life with the other little ones…. All our team now hopes the bad days are over…let’s all cross our fingers!!!
Thank you
Roxane/J.A.C.K.
