Kavu is a female Lesula (Cercopithecus lomamiensis) who was first spotted in the village of Lukavu, in Sankuru Province. Another baby monkey, an albino black-crested mangabey (Lophocebus aterrimus), was found living attached to her.
This little one was very fragile, clinging tightly to Kavu, as he had just lost his mother, his source of comfort.
When the authorities arrived to confiscate the two animals, the mangabey had already perished. Only Kavu was transported to Lodja and handed over to our partner APPACOL-PRN.
But it seems Kavu has a strong maternal instinct, because just a few days after arriving in Lodja, a young blue monkey (Cercopithecus mitis) was entrusted to Heritier Mpo. The newcomer found immediate solace in the arms of Kavu.
