Dear Friends,
Many thanks to all our Facebook Friends who sent us their best thoughts and prayers for young Wanza yesterday.
Wanza wasn’t doing very well last Monday. At feeding time in the afternoon, I noticed he didn’t easily walk and couldn’t move his neck. He picked up some food by stretching his arm and bringing it to his lips with a lot of concentration and…pain. When I isolated him for observation, I noticed his throat was slightly swollen but that it was soft when palpated. He was given anti inflammatory medication that evening.
The next morning (yesterday), his throat was more inflated and a big soft bubble (it looked like an abscess) had suddenly appeared . This time, Wanza refused me to come closer to touch his throat – it apparently looked very soar. There was no fever.
When the vet arrived, he decided to sedate the young male for better check up.
The ‘bubble’ had meanwhile slightly disappeared and the throat was really swollen but still soft.
Because Wanza had some nose discharge, the vet’s first idea was that Wanza was probably starting flu again. Remember, we had a flu outbreak last January and Wanza was among the very sick chimps. He was also the only one who never sneezed and who had swallowed all the phloem causing like a bump in the neck … What is happening now is maybe all that post nasal drip that has turned into an infected liquid….
The other idea of Vet Jean-Claude is that maybe Wanza had an allergic reaction to something (food, insect bite)…
Because we didn’t exactly know what happened, blood samples were and sent to the lab…
Wanza woke up without any problems but seemed weak in the afternoon.
This morning his throat is less swollen and Wanza can slightly move his neck. I still have decided to keep him indoors for further observation…
Thank YOU again to all those who sent us kind messages yesterday! This encourages a lot especially when things like these occur…
THANK YOU for WANZA!

I wish WANZA a speedy recovery
