Thanks to the amazing support of the PAIRI DAIZA FOUNDATION, we have been able to launch the construction of a new Nursery building which will house the baby chimpanzees we have recently rescued.
The massive influx of primates made it indeed hard for our Founders to accept further rescues as facilities became insufficient.
In addition to this, wild chimpanzees come from the warm and humid forests of DRC. When they arrive at the sanctuary, they are confronted with the vagaries of our climate. The city of Lubumbashi and its surroundings are known for their austral winter (end of May until the beginning of October): temperatures can drop to 5°C/ 41°F which can be fatal to very young chimpanzees.
For these two main reasons, a warm nursery building was urgently needed to rehabilitate new arrivals in the best conditions because we will be unable to save other chimpanzees if we don’t have the appropriate facilities to accommodate them.
In the first 7 months of 2022 alone, 4 chimpanzees were saved from trafficking in protected species and the illegal bushmeat trade. MONGA, BANDA, BUNIA, HUSSEIN already live at the Rehabilitation Center. Remember, for 1 baby chimpanzee taken from the wild, 8 to 10 adults including its mother are killed.

A fifth is on the way: CESAR from LIKATI will complete this list in the coming days.
We are extremely grateful to the PAIRI DAIZA FOUNDATION, its Board Members and great Donors for their generous contributions which will allow all our new residents to live in adequate conditions.
