The Democratic Republic of Congo is the leading African country and the third in the world with the greatest diversity of primates. Unfortunately, many primates living in the DRC are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and the rampant consumption of bushmeat in cities and abroad, which has driven the capture of primates and other species to unsustainable levels.
Confiscated by the Sankuru authorities, about a dozen young primates have been rescued in recent weeks from the illegal bushmeat trade and the exotic pet trafficking. Taken from inhumane conditions where they were kept as pets, all these primates are traumatized due to the massacre of their families and the mistreatment they have endured.
The various primates have been entrusted by the Sankuru Provincial Environment Coordination to our partner, APPACOL-PRN, which is providing them with the best possible care, including dietary and veterinary support. In direct contact with J.A.C.K.’s veterinarian, Mr. Héritier MPO, the coordinator of APPACOL-PRN, and his team are providing daily care. A surrogate mother is on-site to help these orphans regain strength and courage.
The traffickers and torturers have been arrested, and some are now awaiting sentencing from the court for the crimes committed against wildlife.
These victims of the bushmeat trade deserve a new chance at life, and J.A.C.K has agreed to take them into its rehabilitation center in Lubumbashi.
These orphans urgently need your help. In addition to their air transfer, they require immediate care and will need your support during the first six months of their rehabilitation. Here are some ideas in case you wish to be part of their second chance in life:
- 20$ balanced food (fruits, vegetables, continuation milk, baby cereals, etc)
- 25$ veterinary care
- 50$ travelling documents (certificates, permits, taxes)
- 75$ surrogate mother
- 150$ air transfer (2 air planes)
Every gesture makes a difference and helps J.A.C.K. perform miracles for these orphans. You can make a donation through our sister organization in the USA, FRIENDS OF JACK PRIMATE SANCTUARY
